About Us

East Stone Gap Baptist Church has roots that go back more than a 100 years.  The church came into existence through the vision of a few faithful members of this community.  They were obedient to God's direction to begin a Baptist church in their area.  The church began in 1897 with the families meeting in their homes to worship.  Soon wood was prepared and delivered to the church site from the old saw-mill in the "wildcat" section of the community.  The wooden structure went up along with the prayers of many saints and before long people were worshiping at East Stone Gap Baptist Church,a lighthouse for the people of this area.

By 1970 the old wooden church had been outgrown by the congregation.  A new church was designed and then constructed by the faithful labors of the church members.  Each family gave both time, talent and money to see the building complete, and soon it was and people were worshiping in a newly dedicated sanctuary and with room for a growing membership.

In recent years the church purchased the old Wise Baptist Associational office which sat next door to the church.  The offices have been used for a variety of purposes and currently houses the HELP Center food and clothing ministries. Also the church purchased a tract of land across the road from the church and erected a large multi-purpose building for the growing needs of the church.  The building was named and dedicated in 2004 in honor of it two leading benefactors, French Taylor and Ned Lewis, and is aptly called the Taylor-Lewis Baptist Community Center.

East Stone Gap Baptist Church is a growing family minded church seeking to minister to the whole person, body, mind and soul.  We have a active and growing children and youth ministries, along with worship and Bible study opportunities for adults as well.  We reach out and serve our community through different events and ministries, including the HELP Center food and clothing ministry. Our church also sponsors the Hamilton Mission team.  This team led by Jim and Elaine Hamilton, life long members of our church.  They travel each quarter to the nation of Moldova to conduct medical missions for the needy, orphans, and those living in a government run institution. The team while working to serve the physical needs of the people also seek to reach and serve them spiritually as well, teaching them about the love of God and His goodness.

We are a members of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia and The Southern Baptist Convention.
